Description of the course

This course is specifically designed for Spanish teachers/L2 from the United States and Canada who are interested in improving their linguistic competence in today´s Spanish Language and their cultural proficiency in two specific areas: wine and gastronomy, which have a significant impact on the language. Teachers of bilingual programs, immersion programs, Grades K-12 and professors of Community College or Universities.

Duration: Three weeks (60 hours)

Dates: From June 30 to July 18, 2025

Number of participants:  A minimum of 8 and a maximum of 22

Level of Spanish: The required level of language is B1 (archived or equivalent) 

Highlights of the course

This course provides an opportunity to share knowledge, skills, and experiences on language teaching and learning in various educational contexts with native Spanish/L2 teachers and foreign colleagues.  Furthermore, the course is divided into three modules, first two with the main objective of improving professional performance: A) Expanding language proficiency; B) Active methods for teaching Spanish. The third module focuses on a specific area that is very current issue and that attracts tourism in Spain:  C) Wine culture and gastronomy and its impact on the language. The historical heritage linked to wine and the economy of the winemaking environment of Castilla y León and, in particular, of the province of Valladolid, allows a cultural and linguistic immersion as a cultural implement in the learning of today´s Spanish.

Methodology

The techniques applied in the classroom are based on the communicative approach, both in its notional-functional dimension as well as in the methodological aspect of the action-based approach.

When applying this method, students are considered in their three main areas: as social agents who learn a language as a means of communication that will enable them to engage in communicative interaction, as intercultural speakers which allows them to assimilate aspects of the new culture in an integrated manner, and as independent learners who are central to their own life-long learning.

As a complement and continuation of learning outside the classroom, the program includes:

  • Guided tour around the city
  • Cultural visits in the city of Valladolid:
  • Visit to the National Polychrome Sculpture Museum
  • Museum of Contemporary Art- Patio Herreriano
  • The city Town Hall
  • Visit to Cervantes House & Museum

 

Workshops:  Spanish culture context, Spanish TV series, activities with the Spanish short films, Virtual tour of Spain´s Michelin Star Restaurants.

 Full-day trip to Segovia
Segovia is one of the cities declared World Heritage in the community of Castile and Leon.  It houses one of the most spectacular monuments of Roman times: The Aqueduct.

Cultural visits: Guided tour around the city, Visit to the National Polychrome Sculpture Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art- Patio Herreriano, The city Town Hall, Visit to the House-Museum of Zorrilla, Exhibition Hall ofMuseo de la Pasión.

Workshops:  Virtual tour of Spain´s Michelin Star Restaurants, Spanish TV series, activities with the Spanish short films, Spanish culture context.

Other leisure activities: Tapas night and Treasure hunt.

Attendance Certificate

The Center will provide participants with an attendance certificate and an academic transcript (grades will follow the American grading system).

Cost of the course with accommodation:  1.900 €

 

This price includes:60 contact hours, the above-mentioned cultural activities and full day trip, workshops, student card, certificate of attendance, accommodation (half board) at the Reyes Católicos Postgraduate Residence Hall in the city center and primary medical Insurance during the course period.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

 
REFRESER OF SPANISH LANGUAGE MODULE: 20 HOURS

The Language classes will have a double objective. On the one hand, the revision and practice of some functional, grammatical, and lexical contents selected from the needs detected in the participants and developed in real communicative contexts of different fields (learning situations) and, on the other, the development of critical analysis of some activities that promote an active role of the student and encourage different learning strategies through activities that will be carried out inside and outside the classroom.

ACTIVE METHODOLOGY IN THE TEACHING OF SPANISH/L2 MODULE: 20 HOURS

This module is designed as a place of learning, meeting and exchange of knowledge and experiences, in which students have an active role and where both the contents worked and the dynamics of the class itself favors the acquisition and development of strategies and tools that teachers can incorporate into their teaching practice.

CULTURE OF WINE AND GASTRONOMY MODULE: 20 HOURS

This third block has the added interest of a development, on a personal level, of the L2 Spanish teacher, since it focuses the center of interest on a specific area of great relevance and a tourist attraction in Spain. As configured, with sessions inside and outside the classroom, it allows for a cultural and language immersion of undoubted appeal as an implement in bringing up to date linguistic-cultural training and as a personal development for the teacher.

The module consists of sessions in the classroom, which will work contents related to cultural references of Spain around the culture of wine and gastronomy, which will allow the student to improve his vocabulary and practice linguistic structures linked to these focuses of cultural interest.

Sessions outside the classroom consist of:

  • Visit to a traditional winery in Valladolid (Tordesillas)
  • Visit to the Provincial Wine Museum and Castle (Peñafiel)
  • Culinary experience in the Valladolid Cooking School

  • Estar trabajando/estudiando en EE. UU. o Canadá.
  • Una titulación mínima de Bachelor (Grado o Licenciatura) y experiencia docente.

 

PRECIO DEL CURSO

Precio del curso con alojamiento:  1.900 €

Este precio incluye: 60 horas de clase, las actividades y viaje cultural mencionado anteriormente, talleres, tarjeta de estudiante, certificado de asistencia, alojamiento y desayuno en una Residencia de Posgrado Reyes Católicos en el centro de la ciudad y seguro médico durante el período del curso.

INFORMACIÓN SOBRE EL ALOJAMIENTO

 

Alojamiento en régimen de media pensión en una Residencia de Postgrado situada en el corazón de Valladolid, entre la Plaza Mayor y la Plaza de España, a poca distancia del Palacio de Santa Cruz, (sede del Rectorado de la Universidad de Valladolid), y el edificio histórico de la Universidad (actual Facultad de Derecho).  La residencia acoge a estudiantes graduados, investigadores, profesores asociados o invitados de la Universidad, participantes en Congresos y Tribunales.

El edificio cuenta con una sala de conferencias, sala de informática, sala de estudio, espacio para eventos y congresos. También dispone de servicio de lavandería y limpieza diaria de habitaciones. Las habitaciones están equipadas con baño, teléfono y conexión gratuita a Internet (tanto por cable como Wi-fi), televisor y frigorífico.
